@stelliebeans - you can go as far as the wifi signal will travel. If you add a high gain antenna to your router it may help. Using cellular would improve the reception, but it really changes the whole equation. I'm not familiar with how to do that in a DIY way, but I have seen several setups available for sale online.

Hi Bill, This is something that I have been searching for so that I can keep an eye on my horses/belongings at our field in our village (in the UK). How far away is the max for something like this or could I use a cheap mobile phone to transmit the signal? Not very technically minded but just know someone could make this possible. Thanks

This can be slightly off of subject but I've noted using Internet protocol cameras to have quite a few benefits over conventional CCTV systems. Even if modern DVRs work on the internet anyway. I'm considering other individuals opinions about this.

Hi Bill,

Congrats on your project! I eager to make something similar, but I see 20W panel won't be enough to power a wi-fi camera and a wi-fi router with USB storage (where the photos will be kept).... although both seems to draw less than 10W. it is good you have 12V camera now, that inverter with adapter is really bad and leads to losses. You can easily reduce 12->5V with LM7805 or similar voltage regulator, now there are models with up to 2Amps output current. Anyway, it is a great work, really it can be used in many ways, and gives a lot of possibilities. Thanks for the hard work and sharing!
